Information on C.M. Keiller
03. Apr 2010 at 06:53

I am slowly preparing a booklet on the model engineering activities of this model engineer for the N25GA. I have all he wrote about 1/2" scale loco's fom the model engineer magazine, but understand that he also wrote for English Mechanics and maybe other publications.

Keiller was well respected by LBSC, you only have to read some of the CM's stuff to understand why. (white metalled big end bearings for instance). He was part of a motor vehicle making business at one time, and rumour has it that he may have built an airplane as well.

Last mention of him in ME was concerning the theft of one of his loco's from a family member. I have tried to track the lead, but no results.

So if you have any info, please respond.
Thanks
Errol

Hello Errol,

Thanks for the kind words about the website etc. elsewhere  Embarrassed

Would it be 'our' C M Keiller who was involved in the GWK car company then?

Abby - C M Keiller was a fine engineer and responsible for the ratio of flue tube diameter to length that we use today. He also had a lot to do with the design of miniature injectors in the early days.

The loco of his that was stolen (and I presume never recovered  Cry) was a superb 2½" gauge Midland Compound to ½" scale which made it smaller (and even more fiddly!) than our 'modern' locos which use 17/32" to the foot. The loco was a true compound and apparentally performed very well.

Hi John

Thanks for the input and very nice to finally get in touch.
Yes, CM Keiller is ours and I have searched the internet for info. Des Adeley thinks he also may have gone into aviation, but I can find nothing about that.

I tried to track down the relative mentioned in the stolen loco doc., but no leads. I perhaps do not need to go into great detail with his life as it is his ME activities that concern us. Incidently, I am curious as to how much a change 1/2" is to 17/32" as regards the miniature loco.

The web ME index's have 4 pages listing all CM's letters and articles, so its going a while to examine them all.

Till the next time,
Errol
